Read Dennis Lee’s “Body Music” (an online course reading), then go back to his segments
#1 & #2 in that essay. Tackle Lee’s ideas in #1 & #2 in 2 to 3 pages of your own
thoughtful, lively discussion. Support your response to Lee’s ideas with at least one example
from your chosen book of poems Explain your example(s).
2. In your chosen poet’s book, notice places where silences are key, or where the poet seems
to makes effective use of silence, or where a particular silence (pause, line breaks, space) is
essential for the poem. Choose one such poem, and tell me—in one clear, detailed
paragraph—what is so effective (for you) about that silence, what role is it serving in the
poem.
